What Colour Will You Turn To? Baby Blue by Kevin Oh

Aloha!
I have been listening to this one song on repeat for the past few weeks months. Aaah. I have not been writing for months it feels awkward 😦
Ok. Let’s try.
This song is one of the OST songs of a drama that I have not watched: 디어 마이 프렌즈/Dear My Friend, sung by Super Star K7 (audition program): Kevin Oh. Since I haven’t watched the drama, obviously I got to hear the song for the first time from another source.

I really like its super sweet melodies filled with soft guitar tunes and whistles. But baby blue in a sweet/romantic song? I would not really correlate the two.

Baby blue to me is more like this:

Kevin Oh’s voice convinces me that baby blue is sweeter than the overrated pink. Oh and, this song’s plus point? It’s in  English! I wouldn’t have to use my overworked/overused/goldfish like brain to translate it. So I hope everyone would be able to enjoy this song as much as I do (still on repeat).

Lyrics

Baby Blue – Kevin Oh

In my dreams

underneath the stars

are letters in my heart

saying maybe it’s true
that baby you

will turn to baby blue

falling just like “oooh”
Take it slow

feel it in our bones

and by the end we’ll know

that we were never dreaming
In good time

the white inside our eyes

will turn to baby blue
La La La La La La

La La La La La La
La La La La La La

La La La La La La
With nothing more to say

These words will never change

For you for you I will stay
Can’t you see?

You’re the one who sees

me for who I am

Will you be the answer?
All this time

trying to make you mine

falling just like “oooh”
La La La La La La

La La La La La La
La La La La La La

La La La La La La

What do you think your turn into sweet lovey-dovey colour would be?
Speaking of change. I would like to believe that human being can change (for the better). It may take forever, but it is possible. Someone has been telling me to be cautious and not to be so naïve about it.

Well, I know that some people will still decide to stay as that annoying pain in the rear in your life. But if we open our heart to believe that a person, who has shown effort to change, has changed – then aren’t we giving them a chance to ooze out beautiful colour from their aura (I hope it’s mint green)? Then, everyone will be entertained with the soft and soothing colours of kindness and love.
Well, if you’re not for the idea…. Let’s just float in the song and let it calm and soothe your day.
That is all.

Untill the next one!

Love,

Happy Strawberry Cheesecake Day 2016!

Happy Whimsical Hump Day!

Today is a slow day at work, so I decide I should just post something. *shhh. this will be done and  posted on my break*

It is my 2x birthday strawberry cheesecake day today. I don’t normally celebrate this day other than by having the tradition of inhaling a piece of yummy strawberry cheesecake. However, being Asian, a lot of the wishes I got from le dear family this year has just got to be about love life/Marriage *mom please stop for a while, if not just for today. pleaseeee* 😀 . Sigh.

Since they decide to think, if not worry, about that oh-so-Asian-of-them on my behalf, I decided to create a list of things to do before 30 instead. And I’m gonna share some of it here.

  1. Be kind anyway!
  2. Go to Banff (11 years in Canada and yet……. I know!)
  3. Conquer my acrophobia by trying bungee jumping (SOON!)
  4. Go on Zipline – Whistler!!!!
  5. Try painting for the first time
  6. Visit places outside Seoul/Gyeonggi-Do when I  go to 대.한.민.국!
  7. Try 산낙지/live octopus *Chendani I’m looking at you. Yes you!*
  8. Visit famjam in either Australia/Netherlands and go on a backpack trip around the country
  9. Publish my Indonesian poems project that I have been putting on hold for years (Thanks Mita and Prof.(?) Manneke for the idea and encouragement)
  10. Register for Korean translation certificate!
  11. Be a stronger, courageous, and happier self.

I guess that’s my updated personal goal as I have crossed or modified the list I had when I created this blog.

Even though lately, due to training and work, I have less time to watch k-dramas which resulted in me only having enough time just to post Korean music related stuffs, I will try my best to bring more contents to this blog. Not just the regular so-this-is-what-Korean-stuffs-look-like. I hope that by reading this blog, not only you can learn about Korean culture and language with me, but also I hope you can pick an inspiration or two, consolation, or encouragement for your own self. Ok, let’s call that @edreaMJ’s  vision!

I would like to thank all of you, across the world (based on wordpress stats), who have visited this blog! That means the world to me 🙂

Now, help me cross out that list, if not, come a long as I sneak in all Koreanness into my adventure.

Let’s go!

Love,

The 20-something Med enjoying her 08-06-2016 Strawberry cheesecake day!

Spring? So what? – 10 CM

Hi Monday!

Last Friday I realized that there’s a limit that a human body can take from stress + tiredness + the change of season (a.k.a everyone in the office is sick). After 2 weeks straight of 야근 인뜻 야근 아닌 야근 같은 period of time at work *yes, there was such a time period and it seems to be continuing to this week as well*.  I will take this moment to sneak in my apologies esp. to those of you who have been asking for more k-drama posts. Apologies for not having the time to watch, re-watch, think, and write. I wish I could take 1 week off to sleep *oh and to write of course 😉 * . So bear with me with the short music posts *for now*.

So what happened on Friday was this: I got ready to go to work, and my body and mind decided to crash. So I called in sick, drank some flu medicine plus the mighty Tolak Angin *shout out to all Indonesians living abroad who cannot live without this magical medicinal a.k.a herbal liquid* and went back to sleep (read: early nap).

In the process of getting myself to get back to the sleep mode (not an easy task for me), I found myself rolling on the bed laughing because of this song:

If you have been following my other SNS/Social Media accounts, you might recognize me as an avid fans of 10 cm. And I’m so glad they published this song for so many reasons that I’m gonna tell you. But first, please do indulge in the hilarious lyrics of this spring-so-what kind of song *sure, you can thank me later*

Lyrics + Translation

봄이 좋냐?? – 십센치

So You Like Spring (that much)?? – 10 cm

Official English title: What The Spring??

꽃이 언제 피는지 그딴 게 뭐가 중요한데 / when will the flowers bloom, what so important about that kind of crap

날씨가 언제 풀리는지 그딴 거 알면 뭐 할 건데 / when will the weather gets warmer, why the hell would you do if you know about it

추울 땐 춥다고 붙어있고 / when it’s cold, saying  it’s cold and sticking close to each other

더우면 덥다고 니네 진짜 이상해 / if it’s hot, saying it’s  hot. You guys are really weird

너의 달콤한 남친은 사실 피시방을 더 / your sweet boyfriend actually

가고 싶어하지 겁나 피곤하대 / prefers to go to the internet cafe (PC Bang) ‘cause he said he’s super tired

봄이 그렇게도 좋냐 멍청이들아 / do you like spring that much? oh these stupid people

벚꽃이 그렇게도 예쁘디 바보들아 / are those cherry blossoms that pretty, you fools

결국 꽃잎은 떨어지지 니네도 떨어져라 / in the end the petals will fall and you guys will too fall apart

몽땅 망해라 / screw all of you

아무 문제 없는데 왜 나는 안 생기는 건데 / there’s nothing wrong with me but why I don’t get anyone (bf/gf)

날씨도 완전 풀렸는데 감기는 왜 또 걸리는데 / the weather has definitely gotten warmer, but why did I catch a cold again

추울 땐 추워서 안생기고 / when it’s cold, because it’s cold I get no one

더우면 더워서 인생은 불공평해 / if it’s hot, because it’s hot life is so uncomfortable

너의 완벽한 연애는 아직 웃고 있지만 / your perfect is still all smiles

너도 차일거야 겁나 지독하게 / but you will soon be dumped in the most terrible way

봄이 그렇게도 좋냐 멍청이들아 / do you like spring that much? oh these stupid people

벚꽃이 그렇게도 예쁘디 바보들아 / nare those cherry blossoms that pretty, you fools

결국 꽃잎은 떨어지지 니네도 떨어져라 / in the end the petals will fall and you guys will too fall apart

몽땅 / all of you

손 잡지 마 팔짱 끼지 마 끌어 안지 마 / don’t hold hands, don’t link arms,  don’t cuddle

제발 아무것도 하지 좀 마 / please just don’t do anything

설레지 마 심쿵하지 마 행복하지 마 / don’t you feel fluttered, don’t you have racing hearts, don’t be happy

내 눈에 띄지 마 / don’t be noticeable in front of me

봄이 그렇게도 좋냐 멍청이들아 / do you like spring that much? oh these stupid people

벚꽃이 그렇게도 예쁘디 바보들아 / are those cherry blossoms that pretty, you fools

결국 꽃잎은 떨어지지 니네도 떨어져라 / in the end the petals will fall and you guys will too fall apart

몽땅 망해라 / screw you all

How is this song hilarious? Because it’s a bit sarcastic? Sad? Witty? Quirky? Blunt? Against the odds?

Maybe all of that. Or maybe because it’s just simply honest in the funniest way. One thing to bear in mind tho, as soon as spring came, the *Korean* radio will repeatedly air the spring songs. One of the song that you’ll hear on the radio *if not everywhere* so often is the forever spring anthem: 벚꽃 엔딩/Cherry Blossom Ending by 버스커 버스커/Busker Busker. Note that I really like this song as well *for 5 straight years, on each year’s spring time and every other seasons as well*. So when I hear this song, it feels super refreshing.

And also this. I understand that spring equals to pink trees verywhere. And that pink is, arguably, romantic. I got this from one of my favourite radio program,  that spring often brings those butterflies in your tummy kinda sensation because the weather is getting warmer and that you see more cheerful colours of the earth. To say it in simple English, research found that you will fall in love easier *or having that falling-in-love like emotions/sensations* in the spring because your brain is triggered by the change of temperature and the more colours that you see around you. You weak brain! 😀

Well. Whether you have your plus one or not (even worse, you you are in a long distance relationships *you, yes you!*), I guess not everyone can really follow why the pink cherry blossoms have to be connected with the let’s-be-more-romantic kind of atmosphere.

If you think that there’s nothing about spring to exaggerate, 10 cm got your back! If you still feel like Spring is your chance to have all those romantic cherry blossoms date or extra romantic walking under those pink trees with your date, then you can laugh along this song *I guess* and have breather from those romantic spring anthems.

Do you like spring that much? Yes? No? Well, don’t mind if I do! Words of advice tho, cherry blossoms will only bloom for a really short period of time. Before you know it, they will fall to the ground *or washed away by the rain* and bam – they’re gone. So, whether you are starting your relationships because you think that spring is the right time, or if you think that it’s the perfect chance to feel extra excited and lovey dovey, I hope it will last way longer than cherry blossoms bloom!

Remember that it is not what triggers your heart *or tummy* to feel that roaming butterflies that matter the most. It’s not the happy colours that should set how close or comfy you are to your plus one. But the most important thing is the fact that you are with that very person. That what makes it special.  And that very decision that you made to be with that person will make you go through not only the during cherry blossoms fever, but also the rest of spring and all through the other 3 seasons times infinity.

Happy spring all!

#PracticeMakesPermanent: K-Drama vs K-Show

Happy Spring-is-still-2-months-away Wednesday!

Ever since I started revamping and trying to resurrect this blog I have not really shared with you, any of my Korean learning experiences. I did try sharing them in the past posts, and it is not like I want to keep it as a secret. Trust me there is no secret whatsoever. But, the way I learn Korean is not a studious kind, and more like unconventional one *as you might have figured by now*.

But today I will try to share one of them anyways. Who knows you will benefit from it. Sharing is caring right? 😉

One of my learning methods is by watching a lot of Korean dramas , movies, and Korean TV Shows. Like a lot of them. Everyday *well, almost*. Throughout the years, though, I feel like Korean drama (k-drama) and Korean TV show (k-show) each has different, how should I say this, “qualities” than you can take for your Korean learning journey. Trust me, I have been doing this circa 2002!

K-Drama vs. K-Show

So here are just a few of the different qualities of learning Korean by watching k-drama vs. k-show that I could come up with (and why sometimes I prefer one over the other):

Pace
If you’re watching k-drama, most of the time, the pace that the casts have when they’re reciting their line is quite the same*if not slower* compared to a regular conversation. This way you catch how a sentence is formed better than if it said in a k-show *try to catch what the nation Yoo Jae-Suk is saying in most of his shows. Yep. Good Luck!*. Plus Korean drama they might have OST songs playing in the background, but so much less background noises *yelling, laughing, sound effects* that would distract you from catching the lines/sentences being said.

To add unto this, since k-drama lines are more scripted than k-show *less improvisations/ad-libs, you might be able to pick up more grammar lessons there.

Vocabulary
I just mentioned that you might be able pick up grammar lessons more when you’re watching kdrama than kshow. But, I have a problem with the choices vocabs they use. They’re just kinda iffy to be used in daily life.

Simple and most common used word that people might picked up from a k-drama is: 당신 (dang-sin). Imagine calling everyone 당신 for “you”. It might be described as the standard polite way, but I rarely hear them being used in daily life *unless you’re ahjumma-ahjussi couple calling each other, or if you’re really angry and trying to pick up a fight*.

Itching to say the word “dang-sin” now? Just sing this song:
당신은 사랑받기 위해 태어난 사람~

Intonation
For this one, you can benefit from both of them. Need to learn proper intonation 반말 (banmal/informal figure of speech) and/or 존댓말 (cheondaemal/formal figure of speech)? They both could teach you that. Remember that k-show will be more casual and day-to-day; whereas k-drama will be filled with the character’s emotions, but slower and easier enough for you to pick up (and imitate).

Repetition and on screen captions

Have you heard exclamations or one word that you could catch being said over and over again in a k-show? Have you seen letters written all over your screen while the words are being said? Like big letters. Repeated throughout the show like this:

Yeah, you have seen this a lot on TV shows, right?!

To me this is a great benefit *especially for beginners* as they are repeated, and most of the time, written in big and flashy colours. They are usually written to emphasize exclamations or reactions like 대박 (Daebak) or ㅋㅋㅋㅋ(kkkkkk). You’ll usually get to know the meaning by watching what’s going on when they are displayed. They’re often repeated, you’ll grasp the meaning in no time. But if not, and if you’re lucky) it can make it easier for you to remember the pronunciation and how to say it exactly as how it means (try: 대~~~~~~박!). Since it’s an exclamation, you’ll hear someone saying it at the same time the word(s) is displayed. It will help you remember how to say and read the word. BUT! Because they’re mostly adjectives and/or exclamations or reactions, they can’t help you make a good whole sentence. Some of them are actually captions of what is being said. but, they’re more like summary or the short version of it. Oh well, enough to impress your Korean friends and to text them in style tho.

As for k-drama. When I started to watch k-dramas, I remember I often tried to read signs or any letters popped up on the screen during a scene. But, man, I had to pause a lot because they’re so small and they go by a scene so fast. I feel like I could not check my pronunciation nor could I understand the meaning unless I looked for it myself. However, I still it is a good practice to know your Hangul!

keep-calm-and-learn-korean-12

K-Drama or K-Show, as long you’re picking up bits and pieces *and not just plain adoring the casts and watching ’em for entertainment purposes only*, I bet they will help you in your quest to master the language!

Which one do you like watching more? Do you feel like you can learn more from K-drama or K-show? Spotted more good points? Share it with us on the comment below or tweet them my way @edreaMJ!

Happy learning,
